RAILFAN GUIDES HOME
RAILROAD SIGNALS HOME
Riderwood (and adjoining Ruxton) started out many, many years ago as a railroad stop on the Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad, then the Northern Central Rwy, and finally the Pennsylvania RR (before the Parkton local was "killed" in the early 60's). Both communities steadily grew up into the mid 1950's, when most of the empty parcels of land disappeared.
Few empty lots remain today. Two lots were created when a property at the corner of Bellona Avenue and Ridervale Road was subdivided, and the two new lots sold in 1996. Houses were built on them in short order.
Riderwood retains a rural setting, even tho it is only 15 minutes from downtown Baltimore. It is centrally located to many convenient shopping, eating, and entertainment experiences in Towson, Lutherville, Timonium, and on up to Cockeysville/Hunt Valley. Towson is the county seat for Baltimore county, and we're five minutes away.
The green line below shows where Ridervale Rd ends.
In the USGS map below from 1897, you can see there wasn't much of nuttin around 115 years ago! The blue arrow points to where the "creek" crosses under the railroad tracks at the bottom of the hill at the county property between 1220 Ridervale and 1225 Robin Hood Circle. I added the red to show the approximate location of our streets...... The dark red is the route of the Beltway, the dark green is I-83 north, and the light green is I-83 south, or the JFX, all locations are approximate..... Todd
BELLONA AVENUE
Here are a few homes located close to Ridervale Road.
8116 Bellona Avenue
This is one of my favorite homes in the neighborhood during the spring.
You can see why!
8118 Bellona Avenue
8119 Bellona Avenue
Listed 11OCT2013 for $424,900. Contract closed 29OCT2013.
As always, thanks to Mimi Wood for the updates!
8120 Bellona Avenue
Located behind this house, on Ridervale, is one of the few open pieces of land
left in Riderwood big enough to put a house on.
8200 Bellona Avenue
Currently on the market for ~$700K.
Ten years ago, this house was sold for $350K. The buyer had the property
re-zoned and split up, and 8202 Bellona Ave and 1199 Riderwood Rd were created
from the split. The owner then sold the house for the same price he bought
it. After 9 months or
so on the market, several price reductions, and a change in realtors, the home
finally sold in Sep 2006.
8202 Bellona Avenue
Built ~1999
8328 Bellona Avenue
A little further away than normally listed on this page, but.... listed
26AUG2013 for $300,000. Contract closed 18SEP2013.
As always, thanks to Mimi Wood for the updates!
This house sits directly across
from Ridervale. Very nice presence in the spring.
This property, to the left of the
house above, has an untold number of varieties of daffodils in addition to the
azaleas, tulips, and dogwoods. The fellow that lived here bought the house
in 1951, making him the longest continuous resident of the neighborhood until
his death in 2010. I went to school and graduated with his son Larry!
RIDERVALE ROAD
Ridervale Road is
located off Bellona Avenue, about 3/8 of a mile from Charles Street.
Houses on the even (west) side are bordered by the Light Rail line, which
started out life as the second railroad in Baltimore back in 1831.
The 19 Addresses on Ridervale
Road include:
1199 1200 1201 1202 1204 1206 1208
1209 1210 1211 1212 1213 1214 1215
1216 1217 1218 1219 1220
The lower numbered houses start at Bellona Ave, and 1220 is the last on the left
before the street "turns into" Robin Hood Circle.
Why they didn't use a different numbering sequence is beyond me, as the house
next to 1220 Ridervale is 1225 Robin Hood Circle, and many times we have
received mail for 1220 Robin Hood Circle :-(
1199 Ridervale Road
The 2nd newest house on Ridervale, having been built ~1999.

1218 Ridervale Road
Only two homes in neighborhood had an in-ground pool,
this was one of them. New windows in 2000.
Sold at auction in 2009 for 250K, way less than the $300K I
had offered the Cunninghams in 2005 before buying 1204 Ridervale, but they
thought the house was worth way more than it was..... they didn't take into
consideration that nothing
had been updated in the house since it was built - NOTHING, and both of them smoked 4
packs a day! The house was subsequently remodeled inside and out with a
new roof, and the
pool was deemed "unrepairable" and filled in... big mistake dudes!

that was a lot of money. They sold the house in 2008 when they decided to
move into assisted living. It sold for something like $430K. New
siding in 2012.
